What To Expect During A SPRAVATO Treatment Near West Caldwell

April 29, 2024

Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) can be diagnosed if you tried two or more traditional antidepressants and don’t see an improvement in your condition. If you’ve been diagnosed with TRD, you now have another way to get relief with SPRAVATO®. This novel esketamine medication has been proven to help with symptoms of depression, like suicidal ideation and actions.

However, SPRAVATO is taken differently than your usual pill or liquid. It is a extremely regulated FDA-approved treatment that can only be dispensed by authorized SPRAVATO providers. But what can you be prepared for during your SPRAVATO treatment Near West Caldwell?

SPRAVATO Can Only Be Administered Through An FDA-Approved Provider

SPRAVATO can only be given under strict medical oversight at a facility certified in the SPRAVATO Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. The Counseling Center at West Caldwell is excited to be part of the program as an approved SPRAVATO treatment provider. Before you start your treatments, we will teach you on the benefits and risks of SPRAVATO use, including misuse, abuse, sedation, and dissociation. We’ll also discuss common side effects, some of which happen directly after the dose and go away the same day.

How SPRAVATO Treatment Works

Your first appointment at our certified SPRAVATO treatment center near West Caldwell is a consultation. You will undergo an assessment to see if you have treatment-resistant depression and if this option is right treatment for you. You could be eligible for SPRAVATO if you took two or more traditional depression treatments and didn’t see improvement in your depression symptoms.

Starting SPRAVATO Treatment Near West Caldwell

Your SPRAVATO treatment can begin as soon as your second session. But before you start, there are a few things to consider.

  • Arrange transportation. You’ll need transportation to and from our location as you won’t be able to operate a motor vehicle or do anything that needs undistracted alertness until 24 hours later.
  • Bring something to do. As you take the treatment, you’ll be monitored for at least two hours. Bring a something to read, a fully charged phone, or another form of handheld entertainment.
  • Guidelines for drinking and eating. Since SPRAVATO can cause nausea and vomiting in some patients, you shouldn’t consume food for at least two hours prior and avoid drinking for 30 minutes.
  • Don’t take other nasal medications for at least one hour. If you take nasal corticosteroid or nasal decongestant medications, do so at a minimum of one hour prior your treatment.

Once you’ve made your arrangements, you’ll be ready to start your SPRAVATO treatment. We will guide you on how to take the nasal spray. You will take it yourself while under the direct supervision of our clinicians. We’ll observe you for a minimum of two hours for side effects and let you know when it’s ok for you to go home.

For four weeks, you’ll take SPRAVATO twice per week. Once completed, we’ll examine the effectiveness of your dosage and advise the next steps that takes into account your symptoms, progress, and other factors.

What Does SPRAVATO Feel Like?
